An 8th Grade Play Like No Other

This year’s 8th Grade Play, Beauty and the Beast, was the story of a prince cursed by a beggar and a production cursed by the weather. The students began working on this project all the way back in November when they read through the script and began trying out for their roles. The students worked hard through January and February learning their lines, blocking and cues, as well as designing props, set pieces and make-up plots. When March finally arrived, they were ready, after countless hours, to put on a terrific show. And that is just what they did at their Tuesday night performance, despite the freezing rain and sleet outside. By the next morning, there was only rain coming down and the class put on another splendid performance, this time for the school. But then the snow came, snow that just would not stop, snow that forced the school to shut down for two days and sadly, cancel the final performance of the play.

Ultimately, with input from the class, the decision was made to make up for the lost performance by showing the video of the play for families and friends last Friday night. This was made possible through hours of work by the teachers who wanted to make the best of a hard situation for the class. It was nice to see the crowd, who had ventured through yet another snowstorm, and give these actors their final round of applause. Hopefully the students have felt the support of the school and community, and also our appreciation for all of their hard work and their resilient attitude. The end of their journey, as goes life sometimes, may not have been what they had expected or had wished for, but it was still really good, and it was something we will all remember.

Great play 8th Graders!
