Milestones at BACS
One of my hopes for our students is that they will experience the feeling of approaching a situation that looks daunting and then the satisfaction of having completed it. These two weeks our fourth graders got to face one of those opportunities when they successfully ran the mile for the first time. The running of the mile is a milestone activity in our PE department. The students in fourth through eighth grade run it three times in the fall and again in the spring, each time running the same course. This allows them to measure themselves against their previous times with a kind of objective measuring stick that isn’t found everywhere. I am proud of the way the students, especially those facing it for the first time, step up to this challenge and continue to work to improve. And while it is fun to see them race up Tomlinson Road at the beginning, it is even more enjoyable to hear them encouraging each other across the finish line at the end. If you see them running by, feel free to cheer as well. They will appreciate it.
