The First Grade Play

Last week was the week of the first grade play. Each year the first graders treat the faculty, student body, and families to a performance of either AA Milne or Beatrix Potter stories, a tradition which dates back to the performances of Peter Rabbit in Mrs. Cranch’s woods. This year we got to see the Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies and the Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. Having the experience of playing a role is a great building block for our students to learn the important skill of empathy and to learn what it is like to walk in another’s shoes, whether they be furry or otherwise.  These students are also learning a new kind of self-confidence and to work together to create something that is bigger than any individual. It is remarkable to see what the first graders are able to produce: narrating, acting, learning lines, singing, and playing instruments. It is a testament to how much they have grown since September. The students, teachers and families should all be proud of this capstone project. It is one of the highlights of our school year.
