Electives

Electives

This Friday was the beginning of our second session of elective classes in the upper unit. The elective program which began last year, runs for an hour each Friday for our 7th and 8th graders. The goal of the program is to provide students with opportunities to try new experiences and to pursue interests that are not reached in the standard school day. It also allows for students from all of our four upper unit classrooms to mix together and get to know students they may not spend a lot of time with. So far this year the students chose to study French culture, battle maps, public speaking, the Hero’s Journey, baseball, web design, upcycled art or to create crankies, which are panoramic scenes that are moved to accompany music. The session that just began includes wood shop, cooking, CrossFit, poetry, photography, games and creating flying machines. The classes are led by a combination of BACS teachers and community members. They can be an opportunity for the students to connect with another adult or to see a staff member in a new light. For many students the electives have become a highlight of the week. If you have thoughts about other topics we could offer or if you have questions about the program, please let me know.
