Art Project Sows Positive Seeds with Students

The hallway outside the music room has become quite popular. Along its wall is a 20- foot interactive mural which was collaboratively created by our art classes. It serves as a symbol of this year’s school theme, “The kingdom of heaven is like a person who sowed good seed in their field,” both in its design and its use. Along the top of the mural are flowers, each connected by roots to an underground seed pod. Within these pods, serving as the seeds, are positive messages written by the students and teachers. Each day, before and after school, students can be found at the mural  pulling out slips of paper and reading the notes. These positive messages range from affirmations like, “You’re awesome,” to inspirational phrases like, “Do a favor and it will be returned.” It is fun to see the effect on the students both young and old when they read these notes. Perhaps more touching though is to see the students volunteering their recess time to keep generating more notes to fill the seed pods. Our art teacher, Linda Kees, certainly found a positive way for our students to begin the school year.
